Zimbabwean Man Eaten By Crocodile While Crossing The Limpopo River
In a rather tragic development, a Zimbabwean man is alleged to have been attacked, killed, and partly eaten by a crocodile in Beitbridge at the crocodile-infested Limpopo River while trying to cross to South Africa.
The development was confirmed by a local online publication on Twitter.
The partly eaten body of a suspected border jumper was recently discovered in the shallow waters of the Limpopo River.
The victim’s name and age have not been made public yet.
The incident happened at a time when scores of Zimbabweans living and working in South Africa made a late dash for Beitbridge following the announcement of a lockdown on Saturday, causing a severe backlog – and significant overcrowding.
As a result, many desperate citizens are using illegal crossing points to go to South Africa. Many are risking their lives by crossing the crocodile-infested Limpopo River just so they can cross over into South Africa to look for greener pastures.
Last year a woman escaped death by a whisker after she fell in the crocodile-infested Limpopo river though she managed to safely swim to the river bank after the incident.
Members of the public have always been warned against using undesignated crossing points when going outside the country.
Meanwhile, the South African government has since deployed helicopters and speed boats to patrol the border in a bid to stop illegal immigration.
