In a rather tragic development, a newly-wed couple from South Africa was electrocuted to death on Sunday just a day after they returned from their honeymoon.
The Johannesburg couple, Zaheer Sarang and Nabeelah Khan were found dead in their Crosby home at around 17:30 on Sunday.
Johannesburg police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed the tragic development to News24. He said;
“It is suspected that the couple was electrocuted. Police are still waiting for the post-mortem results that will confirm the cause of death.”
According to reports reaching iHarare, Khan (24) was electrocuted after touching a tap while she was in the shower and Sarang was electrocuted when he tried to save her.
The couple’s neighbour Hassan Aalim, told the media he knew something terrible had happened when he heard cries coming from their house just a day after they had returned from their honeymoon on Saturday.
“It’s devastating what happened to Zaheer and his bride,” he said.
He revealed that prior to the incident, they had been experiencing power outages and they never got any response each time they laid a complaint with the City Power.
City Power CEO Mongezi Ntsokolo also confirmed the incident and has since ordered an urgent investigation into allegations that a fault, caused by illegal electricity connections led to the couple’s death.
Ntsokolo said a preliminary investigation was underway to establish what transpired. He also urged members of the public not to tamper with electricity infrastructure.
“While we a busy with investigations, we urge the residents to desist from tampering with electricity infrastructure, vandalism, and illegal connections which may lead to the circuit malfunctioning,” he said.
