Mitchel was last seep playing outside her parents’ shop at Nyika Growth Point in Bikita district, Masvingo province. When her parents failed to locate her, they launched a frantic search and even offered a reward of US$1 000, for any information that would help in finding their daughter.
Unfortunately, Mitchel was found dead. According to the family, her body was discovered in a septic tank behind her parents’ shop. The family also said that the body had been tied in a sack before being thrown into the septic tank. It has now emerged that the septic tank in question belonged to the Musharu’s neighbours. The neighbours in whose septic tank Mitchel’s body was found, are reported to have been part of the search party.
Online publication Zim Morning Post reports that the neighbours’ septic tank was opened after one of Mitchel’s shoes was discovered in the backyard. This information was revealed by politician and former Zanu PF member of parliament for Bikita South constituency Jeppy Jaboon. Jaboon is the brother of Mitchel’s mother. Jaboon told the publication,
“When we realised that my niece was missing as a community we set up a search party consisting of the owners of the house she was later found in and we did not find her on the day.”
“Her mother could hear faint screams coming from the house and she tried to confront the owners of the house who dismissed her claims leaving the search party to go around the community searching for my niece.”
The politician went on to say that his sister remained convinced that something was not adding up at the neighbours’ house and redirected the search there.
“When we failed to locate her, my sister could not believe losing her daughter so she went to the backyard of her neighbour’s shop only to see the shoe outside and that’s when she alerted the neighbours,”
The neighbours then conducted a thorough search on the property which resulted in them opening the septic tank. Mitchel’s body was discovered in a sack that had been placed there.
After the police attended the scene, the body was taken for post mortem.
The circumstances of the minor’s death are yet to be established. However, some community members have opined that there was bad blood between Mitchel’s father and the neighbour in question.
In the last year, the country has been rocked by a series of horrific and publicised murders of young children mainly for ritual purposes.
One of the most prominent cases is the murder of 7-year-old Tapiwa Makore of Murewa, who was murdered on the instructions of his uncles Tapiwa Makore (senior) and Thanks Makore.
In another case, two men from Mwenezi were arrested after they brutally murdered a 6-year-old girl, and cut off her private parts intending to sell them in South Africa for ritual purposes. One of the alleged murderers is the older brother of the victim’s father.
