A 42-YEAR-OLD man from Heritage Park suburb in Gweru set a house on fire in which seven people including his wife were sleeping following a misunderstanding.

The incident which has become the talk of the town happened last week.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the development saying the suspect Darlington Miti had since handed himself over and was assisting police with investigations.

“Police in Gweru are investigating a case of attempted murder where Miti set a house and a car on fire following a heated argument with his wife. Miti had a misunderstanding with his wife Chipo Masunda of nine years after she had allegedly asked her stepson to move out of their house and stay with his mother,” he said.

Inspector Mahoko said the matter did not go down well with Miti who then took his son to an unknown place before coming back around 2am.

“The complainant woke up and found her husband breaking window panes. He went on to pour petrol into the room before setting it on fire. Miti proceeded outside where he burnt a Nissan Murano belonging to his wife which was parked outside,” he said.

He said the complainant and other people managed to escape unhurt.

“The complainant, her children and other people who were in the house managed to get out and no one was injured in the incident. The burnt property was valued at US$8 000.”

Inspector Mahoko appealed to citizens to refrain from using violence when solving disputes but to always engage third parties.

“As Zimbabwe Republic Police, we call upon members of the public to always seek help from third parties to settle disputes and refrain from using violence,” he said.
