A horrible tragedy befell a Buhera family on Monday after four minor children were burnt to death after the family’s hut caught fire in yet to be established circumstances.
The sad incident occured in Machaka village under Chief Nerutanga in Buhera.
Online publication New Zimbabwe reports that on Monday night, 31-year-old Melody Zimondi retired to bed with her four children after supper.
According to the police, when Zimondi and the children went to sleep in the kitchen hut, they did not have a lamp or a candle in the room.
However, at around 9 PM, Zimondi woke up to find the room full of smoke and the hut on fire. She rushed outside and screamed for aid from the neighbours.
One of the neighbours, 58-year-od Paul Machaka responded quickly to the cries for help. Machaka rushed into the house and managed to rescue 3-year-old Tinotenda Machaka and 13-year-old Rumbidzai Chikoho.
Unfortunately, before Machaka could rescue the other two children, the roof collapsed on 6-year-old twins Tanyaradzwa and Takudzwa Machaka. The two were burnt to death inside the hut.
The other two children who had been rescued, Tinotenda and Rumbidzai, were rushed to Murambinda Hospital. Unfortunately, they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The deaths of the four children were confirmed by Manicaland province police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda.
Inspector Chananda said that the police attended the scene after receiving a report of the fire and the deaths of the children.
