In a case of discipline gone wrong, a Binga man inadvertently killed his teenage daughter when he kicked her in the stomach after learning that she was pregnant.
47-year-old Anderson Munkuli was furious when he discovered that his 17-year-old daughter Respect, who was doing her form 4, was 6 months pregnant. This situation was worsened when Respect told her father that she wanted to get married to the person who was responsible for her pregnancy.
Respect’s lover even approached Munkuli and offered to marry her. Munkuli turned down the request saying that his daughter was too young and that she was still in school.
Later that day, Munkuli who was still angry, armed himself with 3 spears and summoned his wife Otilia and his daughter Respect. The court heard that he made his wife and daughter kneel before him and threatened to stab each of them with the spears for bringing shame and disappointment to his household.
The Chronicle reports that the prosecution alleged that Munkuli hit his wife with the spear handle three times. He only stopped when the handle broke. He then focused his wrath on his daughter, whom he kicked once in the stomach and punched twice on the back of the head.
Following the savage assault, the two women fled from their homestead and sought refuge at a neighbour’s, where they stayed for 12 days. During this time, Respect complained of abdominal pains. Unfortunately, she did no seek medical help and she collapsed and died 12 days after the attack.
Munkuli was arrested and charged with murder. He appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese who is on circuit in Hwange. In addition to the murder charges, Munkuli was facing charges of physical abuse for assaulting his wife.
Justice Makonese acquitted Munkuli on the murder charge after finding him not guilty. However, he convicted him on the lesser charge of culpable homicide. The High Court judge sentenced him to 10 years in jail but suspended two years for five years on condition of good behaviour.
