In a shocking incident, an Agritex officer attacked his wife and sprayed acid on her after he lost a maintenance case at the courts.

46-year-old Tavonga Mpofu from Cheshanga Ward, Mamombe Village under Chief Bvute was dragged to court by his wife 38-year-old Charity Kanyumba for failing to look after his three children.

On May 28, 2021, the court ruled against Mpofu and awarded his wife ZWL $12 000 per month as maintenance.

This decision did not go down well with Mpofu who decided to get back at his wife for taking him to court. Kanyumba is a teacher at Bvute Primary School.

The Masvingo Mirror reports that on June 2, 2021, Mpfouf is alleged to have entered Kanyumba’s home and sprayed her with an unknown corrosive substance on her face, head and hands using an instrument that is yet to be identified.

His wife tried to call for help but she was allegedly overpowered by Mpofu. After the horrific vitriol attack, Mpofu is reported to have left after his wife had stopped moving and appeared dead.

Kanyumba suffered severe burns to the face, head and hands and her eyesight was affected by the substance. She was discovered the next day by one of the teachers who ferried her to Mberengwa District Hospital.

Mpofu was arrested at the hospital after he had followed Kanyumba.

He was charged with domestic violence and appeared before Mberengwa Resident Magistrate Caroline Tafira Nyoni last week.

Mpofu who was represented by Precious Mudisi of Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba Legal Practitioners was denied bail after he insisted that he would visit his estranged wife even though she did not want to see him.

It was revealed that when he was arrested he had tried to force his way into the hospital ward where Kanyumba was admitted.

He was remanded in custody to July 5, 2021.

The most common types of acid used in these attacks are sulfuric and nitric acid. Hydrochloric acid is sometimes used but is much less damaging.  Aqueous solutions of strongly alkaline materials, such as caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), are used as well.

The long-term consequences of the acid attacks may include blindness, as well as eye burns, with severe permanent scarring of the face and body,  along with far-reaching social, psychological, and economic difficulties.
